Fantastic Voyage (FVDD157)

Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller), Billy Boy Arnold, Snooky Pryor, Walter Horton, Junior Wells, Jerry McCain, Doctor Ross, Lazy Lester, Sonny Terry. Jimmy Reed, James Cotton, Howlin' Wolf, Slim Harpo, Forrest City Joe, Sammy Myers, Papa Lighfoot, Walter Mitchell and more.

A super new blues harp compilation from Fantastic Voyage, complementing their recent success with an electric guitar overview that was one of their big successes of 2012 - see FVTD137 Screaming And Crying (3CD).

This may just be a 2CD set but it certainly does not skimp, having as it does 50 rip-snorting gob-iron classics from the acknowledged masters of the form. While some may seem obvious choices, there are plenty of belters not easily found elsewhere on blues harp collections, such as the masterly combination of Big Walter Horton's sweeping harmonica behind Johnny Shines on Evening Sun. And how about Robert Richard's Wigwam Woman or Walter Mitchell's Pet Milk Blues. Not exactly obvious choices are they? And its nice to hear some tracks that haven't been heard for a while, I'd almost forgotten just how much I love Jerry McCain's Steady or Junior Wells and Earl Hooker together on Calling All Blues.

So, a big well done to Fantastic Voyage for this excellent set and especially to Neil Slaven (yet again) for choosing so judiciously.

And, if this gets you begging for more great blues harp, you don't have to look very far as this month also features a re-release of the fabulous Little Walter Properbox that first came out in 2008 but has  been out of print for some little while (see PROPERBOX5145).
